BEZUINIGINGEN / CUTS
Het zijn onrustige tijden in de kunst- en cultuursector. Op zowel op landelijk, provinciaal als gemeentelijk niveau hangt diverse instellingen grote bezuinigingen boven het hoofd. Deze bezuinigingen komen hard aan, ook binnen de animatiesector. Zo kan het nieuwe cultuurbeleid van staatssecretaris Halbe Zijlstra grote gevolgen hebben voor het voortbestaan van het Nederlands Instituut voor Animatiefilm (NIAf). Het verdwijnen van dit instituut heeft niet alleen gevolgen voor direct betrokkenen maar heeft zijn weerslag op de gehele animatiesector die indirect profiteren van de activiteiten van het NIAf.
These are troubled times for the arts. On both national, provincial and municipal level several cuts are threatening the art institutions. These cuts are extensive, also within the animation industry. The new cultural policy, by Halbe Zijlstra, could have major impact on the survival of the Netherlands Institute for Animation Film (NIAf). The closing of this institution does not only affect those directly involved but has repercussions on the entire animation industry that indirectly benefits from the activities of the NIAf.
DE ACTIE / THE DEMONSTRATION
Op diverse plekken in het land zijn acties gevoerd om te protesteren tegen de bezuinigingen. Ook het NIAf wil, samen met de animatiesector, haar stem laten horen. Ons protest neemt de vorm aan van een geanimeerde protestmars. Beweging is de essentie van animatie. De verschillende tekeningen of frames van een animatie op zichzelf hebben weinig betekenis, maar samengevoegd vormen zij een bewegend geheel, net zoals honderd eenzame wandelaars samen een mars vormen.
Om deze mars te realiseren hebben wij jouw hulp hard nodig! Help ons de animatiesector een stem te geven door middel van het delen van een ‘walkingcycle’. De verzamelde walkingcycles zijn te zien op de website www.animationmarch.nl (kijk ook op deze website voor meer informatie) en vormen gezamenlijk een geanimeerde protestmars.
There have already been actions against the cuts on various occasions. The NIAF also wants, together with the animation industry, its voice to be heard. Our protest will take the form of a digital protest march. Movement is the essence of animation. The different frames or drawings of an animation have little meaning in separately, but together they form a moving whole, just as hundreds of walkers form a march.
To achieve this march, we need your help! Help us and the animation industry by sharing a "walk cycle”. The collected walk cycles will be shown on the website www.animationmarch.nl (take a look at this website for more information) and together will form an animated protest march.

HET NIAf / THE NIAF
Kennis- en informatiecentrum.
Vanaf de oprichting van het NIAf in september 1993 heeft het accent gelegen bij de Werkplaats omdat dit de basis is van het instituut. Vanwege de groeiende internationale belangstelling is de naam van de Werkplaats in 1999 veranderd in Animatie Ateliers. Ook wel kort Ateliers genoemd. Deze naam doet meer recht aan de inhoud van deze belangrijke activiteit. In de afgelopen tien jaar is veel kennis vergaard en een netwerk van instellingen en personen opgebouwd. Hierdoor wordt een steeds grotere informatiestroom gegenereerd. Deze informatie staat voor een belangrijk gedeelte ten dienste van de Animatie Ateliers en de educatieprojecten, maar wordt ook ten behoeve van anderen ingezet. Belangrijk voor het onderhouden van dit informatie- en kenniscentrum zijn onderzoek, archivering, collectiebeheer en dataverwerking. Samen met het Holland Animation Film Festival (HAFF) is het NIAf de enige professionele organisatie die de kunstvorm animatie centraal stelt. Nationaal en internationaal wordt het instituut beschouwd als een belangrijke ‘spin in het web’ en een waardevol informatie- en kenniscentrum op animatiegebied. www.niaf.nl
Knowledge and Information.
Since the inception of the NIAf in September 1993, activities have focused on the Studios because this forms the basis of the institute. Owing to growing international interest, the name Werkplaats was changed in 1999 to Animatie Ateliers. These are also referred to as the Studios. This name does more justice to the content of this important activity. The NIAf itself has created the conditions for the functioning of the Studios. In the past ten years a wealth of information has been amassed and a network of organisations and contacts established. This has generated an ever-increasing flow of information. This information is largely at the disposal of the Studios and can be used for education projects, but other people can also use it. Research, keeping records, managing the collection and data processing are all important for the maintenance of this centre of expertise and information. There are no other comparable organisations in the Netherlands. Together with the Holland Animation Film Festival (HAFF), the NIAf is the only professional organisation where animation as an art form occupies centre stage. Nationally and internationally the institute is seen as an important “spider in the web” and a valuable centre of expertise and information in the field of animation. www.niaf.nl
Doelstelling
De doelstelling van de stichting Nederlands Instituut voor Animatiefilm (NIAf) is het bevorderen van de animatiefilm in de meest ruime zin van het woord. Het NIAf wil dit doel te bereiken door vorm en uitvoering te geven aan een educatie, kennis en informatiecentrum voor de animatiefilm met de volgende taken:
1. Het in stand houden van een werkplaats, waar animatiefilmers de gelegenheid krijgen zich te specialiseren en onderzoek te doen;
2. Het opzetten en uitvoeren van educatieprojecten;
3. Het stimuleren van de productie van animatiefilms;
4. Het stimuleren van de distributie en vertoning van animatiefilms en het tentoonstellen van artwork;
5. Het verrichten van onderzoek, beheren van een documentatiearchief, bibliotheek en een collectie films en artwork.
Objective
The objective of the Netherlands Institute for Animation Film Foundation [stichting Nederlands Instituut voor Animatiefilm (NIAf)] is the promotion of animation film in the broadest sense of the word. The NIAf endeavours to achieve this objective by creating and providing an education, expertise and information centre for animation film with the following tasks:
1. Developing a workplace where animation filmmakers are given the opportunity of specializing and carrying out research;
2. Setting up and implementing educational projects;
3. Stimulating the production of animation films;
4. Stimulating the distribution and screening of animation films and the exhibition of artwork;
5. Carrying out research, managing documentation archives, a library and a collection of films and artwork.
